PRESS RELEASE: TwinStar Media signs zombie novel “The Dead Earth”

TwinStar is excited to announce the signing of a new novel: “The Dead Earth” by Jason Offutt!

A brief synopsis of the story:

All signs pointed toward Omaha, Nebraska, as the safe zone. In Omaha, survivors could escape the Crazies and the Piper. They just had to get there in one piece.

The Piper: the nickname of a new, popular, over-the-counter antidepressant made from Ophiocordyceps unilatteralis, a fungus found deep in the Southeast Asian rainforest. The fungus soon begins to infect the millions of people who took the drug, literally changing who you are on the inside.  For the survivors of the new worldwide pandemic, your personality and moral fiber (or lack thereof) will lump you into one of three categories: the Goodies, the Baddies, or the Crazies.

Individuals and groups of Goodies crawl across the American Heartland toward Nebraska.

Past the burning cities.

Past the hanging fields.

Past each other.

They are all hoping to find this safe haven, none expecting what really awaits them.

Oh, and there’s a guy who talks only in dialogue from Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. Nobody said the end of the world had to be totally depressing.

About the Author: Jason Offutt’s published non-fiction paranormal and humor books include “Paranormal Missouri,” “What Lurks Beyond,” “Darkness Walks: Shadow People Among us,” “Haunted Missouri,” “On Being Dad,” and the upcoming “Through a Corn-Swept Land.”  He lives with his family in Northwest Missouri where he teaches college journalism and keeps humanity safe from the forces of evil.  Visit Jason online and learn more about his work at JasonOffutt.blogspot.com.

TwinStar is thrilled to welcome Jason and “The Dead Earth” into the TwinStar family.

PRESS RELEASE: TwinStar signs super-powered novel “The End of Superhero Man!”

TwinStar is excited to announce the signing of a new novel: “The End of Superhero Man” by Chris Welsh!

A brief synopsis of the story:

superhero_flying_across_skylineWhat happens when a super-hero loses what makes him “super?”

Superhero Man is living out his dream – or so he believes.  He has routine battles with The Supervillain (most of which he wins) in order to save The Girl (actually, a newly-cloned copy of The Girl for every battle).  In between the matches, Superhero Man exists idly in his secret lair (his apartment), living a fairly mundane life of snacks, alcohol, and relative solitude.  Financed and supported by the enigmatic SuperMaster, the fight between good and evil continues ever on between the pair, even if most of the people living in The City really couldn’t care less about them.

Life is good enough for our hero – until one fateful day, when his powers are stolen from him.  Yes, they are quite literally stolen: Superhero Man keeps his powers in separate Tupperware containers in his closet, and a mysterious someone has taken them, seemingly without warning or motive.  Now, the suddenly not-so-super super-hero must survive an increasingly-dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the shadowy thief.  As he fights to regain his lost prowess, he discovers more and more about the strange circumstances of how he became so special to begin with.

A mystery layered in irreverent humor and wrapped tightly in spandex, “The End of Superhero Man” eschews what you might typically expect from a heroes-versus-villains story and asks the real question: how many masks can a super-powered person wear?

.

About the author: Chris Welsh is a writer of no fixed genre, but he leans predominantly towards horror, mystery, and superhero fiction, with healthy doses of humour and suspense thrown in for good measure. He was born in the autumn of 1986 in Liverpool, England.  He sports a borderline-unhealthy love of horror films, resulting in a mild obsession with the Evil Dead franchise and anything else that tries to scare him; an arm covered with zombie tattoos serves as proof. He has been writing as a hobby for around six years; “The End of Superhero Man” will be his first published novel. When not writing, Chris likes to draw, paint, run, drink fancy rum, and devour B-movies. He is on Twitter as @C_W_Writes if you fancy discussing the merits of gore-filled films made in the ’80s.

TwinStar is thrilled to welcome Chris and “The End of Superhero Man“ into the TwinStar family.

PRESS RELEASE: TwinStar signs horror noir fiction series “Avery Nolan: Private Dick of the Strange!”

TwinStar is thrilled to announce the signing of Tony Faville’s horror noir/ fiction series “Avery Nolan: Private Dick of the Strange!”

The Avery Nolan series will follow an intriguing concept surrounding the titular main character, a for-hire private investigator in the 1950s who inevitably finds himself working cases involving the unusual, the fantastic, and the horrific. Each installment in the series will be a novella-length eBook, with the stories being compiled into physical, novel-length “casebooks” that will feature additional and exclusive content not found anywhere else in the series!

Faville has already written the first installment of the series, a zombie-centric tale entitled “Avery Nolan: Private Dick of the Dead” (title subject to change). A brief description of the story:

It’s the 1950s in New York City - the Cold War is in full bloom and the Red Scare is everywhere. Private Investigator Avery Nolan is hired by the daughter of a missing research scientist to find him. What he finds instead is the menace of the KGB, a possible U.S. government coverup, and the undead ready to tear America apart from the inside.

Equal parts detective noir and “Night of the Living Dead,” the story is carried into fascinating territory by the title P.I. and an eclectic cast of characters.  Avery Nolan is a Lucky Strike-smoking, scotch-drinking, hard-fighting, straight-shooting private investigator from NYC. Sure, he takes his lumps every now and then, but he is always the first in line when payback is due.  Add in a who’s-who of side characters, including plenty of dames with great gams, good-guy cops whose moral virtues may not be quite as shiny as their badges, egghead scientists who spout enough geek-talk to make Einstein’s head spin, a hot librarian with a cool hand – and, of course, the walking dead – and you’ve got yourself one killer mystery on your hands.

High Praise for “Avery Nolan: Private Dick of the Dead”

“…a great fast-paced noir book with great ghoulish undertones and a sense of humor mixed in with the action and suspense. Think Dick Tracy mixed with Resident Evil!” -Dollar Bin Horror

“…a serious and elaborate crime/mystery/thriller with zombies… a damn fine story.” -ZombiePhiles.com

“I was very impressed by this book. It shows Faville’s gift at storytelling at its best. Avery is an extremely enjoyable character, there’s some cool humor within this book’s pages, and some neat action too. It’s a period piece that delivers in masterful style.” -Eric S. Brown, author of “Bigfoot War” and “A Pack of Wolves”

.

Tony Faville is the author of “Kings of the Dead” and now “Avery Nolan: Private Dick of the Dead.” Before becoming a writer, Tony lived his life as many renaissance men have been known to do: he served in the military, worked for the government, became an IT guru for one of the largest sporting goods companies in the world, and spent many years as a professional Chef. These days, when not writing or working, Tony can be found wading in one of the many rivers in Oregon happily searching for salmon and steelhead, practicing his defensive shooting skills, cooking for friends or family, or just enjoying a nice glass of scotch.

TwinStar is thrilled to welcome Tony and “Avery Nolan“ into the TwinStar family.

SUBMISSION CALL: New anthology, “Tales of The Time Machine,” seeking stories!

FROM PROJECT EDITOR, TONY SCHAAB:

H.G. Wells’ “The Time Machine”is a classic tale that is widely credited with popularizing the concept of time travel via a user-operated and user-controlled time machine.  Being a highly popular and public domain work, the story has seen a slew of written, filmed, and audio interpretations in addition to many sequels and other directly-inspired works.

I, Tony Schaab, have been long fascinated by Wells’ story and consider it a major influence on my life, specifically in my reading and writing styles and genre preferences.  I am thrilled and honored to announce that I recently completed work on my own homage to this particular work: a “mash-up” style novel combining the original text of “The Time Machine” with everyone’s favorite monster: zombies!  “The Time Machine: ReAnimated” is currently in the stages of final production and is slated to be released on September 4, 2012.

“The Time Machine: ReAnimated” concludes in a very similar fashion to Wells’ original tale, with the Time Traveller embarking on another journey through time.  Where the Time Traveller goes and what he does has never been explored…until now.

WHAT IT IS: “Tales of The Time Machine” will take place within the continuity of the universe originally established by Wells’ 1895 novella “The Time Machine.”  It will be a “nov-ology” format; that is, an anthology collection of short stories designed to ideally be read from start to finish, like a standard novel.  The book will follow the exploits of the Time Traveller, in a chronological order relative to the Time Traveller himself (i.e., he may first visit the year 2500 and then go back to the year 1000, and the book will follow the Time Traveller in this order, not in actual chronological order of the time frames visited).  Stories that are submitted and accepted may be edited to flow together with one or more of the other stories to create a more cohesive, novel-like format.  The book may also contain a Prologue and an Epilogue, written by me as the editor, to not only help bind the stories together but to also tie the stories in to the original novella and the “mash-up” version.

WHAT WE WANT: A unique story that focuses on one specific exploit of the Time Traveller, taking place sometime between the years 1895 and 802,701.  Essentially, the world is your oyster here; as a writer, you may let your imagination run wild, as long as the story revolves primarily around the Time Traveller.  IMPORTANT TO NOTE: your story MUST start with the Time Traveller arriving at a given point in time (or at least be inferred that he arrived shortly before your narrative begins) AND your story should conclude with the Time Traveller departing for another destination in time (or at least be inferred that he is on his way shortly after your story concludes).  This is important to note; stories that do not meet this very important requirement will not be considered for inclusion.  Also: do NOT name the Time Traveller.  Wells specifically did not name the man in his novella, and I am hoping to hold true to this fun little artifact throughout both “The Time Machine: ReAnimated” and “Tales of The Time Machine.”

WHAT YOU GET: Each of the authors selected to have their stories included in the book will receive a portion of the author royalties from all sales of the book for the first two years of publication.  Each author’s royalty portion will be decided by factors such as number of total stories included in the book and word count relative to the whole project (i.e. a 20,000-word story with the books’ total word count at 80,000 would garner the author approximately 25% of the total author royalty).  In addition, each author will receive one free author’s copy of the book upon its release.

DETAILS:

  • Stories can be written from a variety of standpoints but should feature the Time Traveller as the primary character of the story.  Since this is a speculative fiction/Alternate-Earth style anthology, you may reference historical events, figures, etc., as part of your story.  Stories may include elements of one or more genres (horror, science fiction, humor, etc.).
  • Word count must firmly fall between 6,000-20,000 words; stories that are longer or shorter than this set guideline will be returned to the author unread.
  • IMPORTANT: Please submit your story as a Word Document (.doc) or an RTF file (.rtf).  DO NOT use fancy fonts anywhere in the document; use a general font such as Arial, Times New Roman, or other “normal” font.  Please double-space, number your pages, and put the following information at the top of the first page: your name, your e-mail address, your phone number, story word count, and story title if you have one (titles may or may not be used in the final version of the book).  If your story was written to take place in a certain era that is not made immediately clear in the story, please include that information as well.

The DEADLINE for submissions for this anthology is 11:59pm EST on Monday, October 15, 2012.

NO MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS and NO REPRINTS will be considered for this anthology.  Since the nature of these stories is so specialized, we are seeking your one best, unique tale; take as much time as you need before the deadline to make your story the absolute best that it can be.

Wells’ original novella “The Time Machine” is a public-domain work and as such is available for free and legal download from a variety of sites.  I HIGHLY encourage anyone who is planning on submitting a story to read the original novella before you begin writing, in order to re-familiarize yourself with the storyline and details that Wells established for this universe and the Time Traveller.

Send all submissions to tony@twinstaronline.com.  Please make the body of your e-mail a brief cover letter, outlining any previous works or publications you wish me to be aware of.  I will send an e-mail confirming receipt of story, but will likely not be offering any acceptances or rejections until after the submission deadline has passed.

Any further questions you may have surrounding the nature or specifics of this project, feel free to send them to me at the e-mail address above or post them on this thread, as I will be checking back often.  Thank you, and I look forward to reading your creations!

–Tony Schaab

PRESS RELEASE: TwinStar Media signs fiction novel “Z=mc2: Time-travelin’ Zombies vs. the Jersey Shore” by Kelly Jameson

TwinStar is thrilled to announce the signing of Kelly Jameson’s fiction novel “Z=mc2: Time-travelin’ Zombies vs. the Jersey Shore!”

A brief description of the story:

As if New Jersey didn’t have enough problems already: zombies from the future invade the Pine Barrens through a time portal in a dumpster behind a cheeseburger joint, and it’s up to an eccentric elderly reptile expert and his former-Marine trainee to save the world and their neighbors (and not necessarily in that order).

Ironically, they are joined in the fight against the zombies by a special member of the undead: Einstein’s Zombie has come through the time portal looking for his brain. Extracted from his body during the post-mortem autopsy, the reanimated genius fears his greatest organ is being utilized in a sinister way, and it may have more connection to the impending zompocalypse than anyone realizes.

Boasting a cast of eclectic characters including a sexy news reporter, a twisted rifle-toting Girl Scout, a pot-smoking veterinarian, a 400-pound lawyer named Hilarius Fuchs, a lesbian couple descended from Jersey anarchists, and an OCD schizophrenic who dresses in pink angora and only speaks in Ed Wood movie lines, “Z=mc2 is a tale both poignantly gratuitous and surprisingly insightful as it asks its reader: who’s the real zombie here?

High Praise for “Z=mc2: Time-travelin’ Zombies vs. the Jersey Shore”

“Z=mc2“is a wacky and hilarious slice of zombie goodness. Wicked and deranged, it’s TIME BANDITS meets SHAUN OF THE DEAD with a big dose of just-plain-nuts. Highly recommended!”
- Jonathan Maberry, New York Times best-seller, multiple Bram Stoker Award winner, and Marvel Comics writer

“A singular tale of undead mayhem that is at times hilarious, insightful, and delightfully random.  If you’re looking for something significantly different than the standard and tired type of zombie tale, Jameson has created just the story for you.”
- TheGOREScore.com

.

Kelly Jameson wrote her first dark suspense novel, “Dead On,” in stolen, sleep-deprived moments, on lunchbreaks, and when her toddler son was napping. The indie novel about a medical examiner being stalked through time by the same killer was named Runner-Up in the 2006 DIY Los Angeles Film Festival and was also optioned for a feature film. She went on to write “Shards of Summer,” which Ken Bruen calls “The Great Gatsby for the Beach Generation,” and “What Remained of Katrina: A Novel of New Orleans,” which was a Leapfrog Press Honorable Mention in fiction. Not one to be boxed in as a “genre writer,” Jameson also authored the romance story “To Tame a Rogue” and a collection of genre-defying short stories called “Desperate, Disturbed, Deraged, and Double-Lattéd.” Jameson graduated from Bloomsburg University with a double degree in Journalism and Anthropology. She lives in the Philadelphia area with her family. Obviously, she drinks too much coffee.

TwinStar is thrilled to welcome Kelly and “Z=mc2 into the TwinStar family.

Cover art for “Before Plan 9″ anthology unveiled!

Hello TwinStar fans!  We are thrilled to unveil the cover art for the upcoming anthology “Before Plan 9: Plans 1-8 from Outer Space.”

The quick synopsis of the book, from the back-cover text:

Greetings, my friends – the Amazing Criswell here.  Anyone who is familiar with Ed Wood’s “classic” film Plan 9 from Outer Space knows that the sometimes-nefarious aliens and their ninth attempt to interact with humanity didn’t quite work out.  What we don’t know is this: what were the first eight Plans?  When did they happen?  What did they entail?  How and why did they fail?  This book, my friends, will answer those questions.

With serious and humorous stories spanning many time periods and genres, including science fiction, horror, noir, steampunk, and speculative fiction, “Before Plan 9″ boasts an impressive array of writing talent, including national and New York Times best-sellers and multiple literary award winners.  This collection is narrated by yours truly, the Amazing Criswell, as I offer you my sage words of wisdom and my unique presentation before each spectacular tale.

Use this tome, my friends, to learn when throughout history the aliens have had their influence, and perhaps it will help to prepare us for their next Plan.  If you don’t heed my warning and choose not to read this book, then God help you… in the future!

The book is planned for release in paperback and all eBook formats by on March 23, 2012.

PRESS RELEASE: TwinStar signs multiple albums from sci-fi/horror rock band The Little Black Bottles!

TwinStar is thrilled to announce the signing of two albums, Let Them Eat Red Velvet Cake and Werewolf of Moncton, from sci-fi/horror rock band The Little Black Bottles!

Werewolf of Moncton is the five-track EP debut of the band.  The EP, showcasing what a reviewer called the “dark and morbid” with a softer tone, chronicles the evolution of the band from an acoustic duo to it’s current 4-piece lineup.  Let Them Eat Red Velvet Cake is the band’s first full-length album, with songs spanning a wide range of not only sounds but also topics from throughout the horror and sci-fi arenas.  Tracks on the album include tributes to zombies, Stephen King, and the movies Carrie and Logan’s Run.  Also excusively included on the TwinStar version of the album is LBB’s single “Baby,” a tribute to the Rob Zombie film House of 1,000 Corpses.

Playing throughout the northwest United States since 2008, the Little Black Bottles have been described as “a true Cascadian rock country experience.” Founded by Jackie and Myke Fedyk as a two-piece band before expanding and adding members and instruments to develop a more wide-ranging sound, LBB has taken their rollicking, ukulele-driven tavern sound and blown it out into a signature style with wide-ranging influences.  TwinStar is thrilled to welcome The Little Black Bottles and these two albums into its catalog.
